Grand National Weekend: Best Ways to Reach Aintree

The Grand National Festival brings over 150,000 visitors to Aintree Racecourse each April. It's one of those events where the atmosphere matters just as much as the racing itself. Groups travel from Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, London and beyond for three days of world-class steeplechasing and a proper day out.

Here's the thing nobody tells you until it's too late. Getting there is half the battle. Parking sells out weeks in advance, trains are packed, and the roads around Aintree get seriously busy. Groups miss the big race every year simply because they didn't think about the logistics early enough.

The 2026 Grand National Festival runs from Thursday 9th April to Saturday 11th April, with the main race at 4:00 PM on the Saturday.

The Transport Challenge on Race Day

Driving to Aintree sounds convenient until you actually try it. The racecourse sits on the A59, just off the M57 and M58, which looks straightforward enough on paper. On race day though, the traffic is something else.

Liverpool City Council and Sefton Borough Council put road closures in place during the festival. If you don't know the local diversions, you can easily add an hour to your journey.

Onsite parking is limited and must be booked in advance. You can't just turn up and pay on the day. The official car parks fill up fast, and police enforce strict No Waiting zones on surrounding streets.

Even if you do get parked, over 70,000 people leave at the same time after the last race. You'll be sitting in gridlock for ages.

Public Transport Options

Aintree Station sits directly opposite the racecourse, which makes trains a popular choice. Merseyrail runs services from Liverpool Central every 10 to 15 minutes normally, with extra trains during the Grand National. The journey takes about seventeen minutes.

The catch is that trains run from roughly 11:00 to 13:00 before the races, and return services operate from 16:30 to 20:30. Platforms get absolutely rammed and groups often get separated in the crowds.

National Express runs direct services from over ten locations including Sheffield, Manchester, and Blackpool. You get guaranteed seating and a set schedule, but there's no flexibility. Scheduled coaches don't wait around, so if your group wants to stay for one more drink or someone's running late, you've got a problem.

Why Private Group Transport Works

This is where things get simpler. A private minibus or coach hire means a vehicle just for your group, with a driver who sorts out the navigation, parking, and traffic while you enjoy the day.

Your driver picks everyone up from agreed points, so there's no messing about coordinating cars or deciding who's driving. You get dropped close to the entrance, the vehicle parks in designated coach areas away from the chaos, and you get collected whenever you're ready.

For groups of eight or more, the cost per head often works out to be about the same as train tickets once you factor in getting to the station and taxis at either end. For bigger groups, it's usually cheaper. Plus the journey becomes part of the day out, with everyone together from the start.

How Slick Minibus and Coach Hire Makes It Happen

We've been taking groups to the Grand National for years, and we know exactly what makes race day transport run smoothly.

Our drivers know the routes to Aintree inside out. They're familiar with the road closures, the best approach routes depending on traffic, and where the coach parking is. This means your group arrives on time without the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads and confusing diversions.

We sort out all the details in advance. When you book, we'll discuss pickup points, departure time, and anything specific your group needs. On the day, your only job is to enjoy yourself. No parking stress, no fighting through crowds on train platforms, no worrying about who's had too many to drive home.

Our Fleet

We've got vehicles for groups of all sizes:

•      8-9 Seater: Great for smaller groups of friends or family

•      16 Seater: Works well for medium groups and city to city trips

•      35 Seater Coach: Plenty of room for corporate outings and bigger groups

•      55-70 Seater Coaches: For large parties heading to major events

All our vehicles are properly maintained, fully insured, and driven by experienced professionals.

Areas We Cover

We do pickups from pretty much anywhere in the UK. Popular routes to Aintree include Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Leicester, and London. We also cover Scotland and Wales for groups coming from further afield.

Planning Your Trip

Sort your transport as soon as you've got your race day tickets confirmed. The best vehicles and slots go quickly, especially for Grand National Saturday. Leave it until March and you might find limited availability and higher prices.

Book your Grand National tickets when they go on sale, sort accommodation if you're staying over in Liverpool, and arrange transport at least eight to twelve weeks before the festival.

The Three Days

Opening Day on Thursday 9th April has four Grade One races. Gates open at 11:00 AM. It's usually the cheapest day for tickets and the quietest for transport.

Ladies Day on Friday 10th April is all about fashion. Aintree fills up with hats, fascinators, and people dressed to impress. The Marsh Melling Chase and Randox Topham Chase are the racing highlights.

Grand National Day on Saturday 11th April is the big one. Gates at 10:00 AM, first race at 13:20, and the Grand National itself at 4:00 PM. This is when 70,000 plus people descend on Aintree, and when your transport choice really matters.

Practical Stuff

Get there early. Security is thorough with bag searches and badge checks, especially on Saturday. Download the Aintree Racecourse app before you go for racecards, maps, and live updates.

April weather in Liverpool sits around 8°C to 12°C with the odd shower, so bring layers and maybe a waterproof. Pick a meeting point for your group because mobile signals get patchy when there's that many people in one place.

What It Actually Costs

For a group of twelve from Manchester to Aintree on Grand National Day:

  • Driving three cars: About £25 fuel per car plus £30 to £50 parking each. Total roughly £165 to £225, plus someone in each car can't drink.

  • Train: Around £15 to £25 return to Liverpool Lime Street per person, plus roughly £10 for Merseyrail to Aintree. That's £300 to £420 for the group, with crowded platforms and no guaranteed seats.

  • National Express: Typically £35 to £50 per person, so £420 to £600 total. Fixed departure times though.

  • Private 16 seater minibus: About £400 to £500 for the whole day. That's £33 to £42 per head, with door to door service, leave when you want, and everyone travels together.

For groups, private hire usually works out the best value as well as the most convenient.

Common Questions

How early should we book?

At least eight to twelve weeks ahead. Grand National Saturday is really popular and the good vehicles go fast.

Can you do multiple pickups?

Yes, we do this all the time. We'll plan a route that collects everyone without adding loads of extra time.

What size vehicle do we need?

Up to 9 people suit our 8-9 seater. Groups of 10 to 16 go for the 16 seater. Bigger groups take our 35 seater coach, and for really large parties we've got 55-70 seater coaches.

Do we have to leave at a set time?

No, that's the whole point. You leave when your group's ready, not when a timetable says so.

Do you cover areas outside the North West?

We cover England, Scotland, and Wales. Just tell us where you're coming from and we'll sort it.

Is it actually cheaper than public transport?

For eight or more people, it usually works out similar or better than train tickets. For twelve plus, it's almost always the cheaper option, and way more convenient.

Book Your Transport

The Grand National is more than a horse race. It's three days of sport, spectacle, and making memories with people you care about. Watching forty horses thunder over Becher's Brook is genuinely special, but the day's much better when you're not stressed about how you're getting there and back.
